Spiros Baras is a self taught artist. Born in Athens, he moved to Syros in 2013 where he is now the founder and owner of Plastico café-gallery.
On Wednesday 13th July at 8pm, we invite you to the opening of the exhibition of Plastico’s founder, Spiros Baras. After 9 years of living on the island (3 of which running the gallery), Spiros never stopped painting and loving art.
Today, with the help and experience of Sharon Harvey, curator of art exhibitions and owner of a private gallery in Dubai, Spiros has selected some artworks that he has painted while living on Syros.
“Spiros uses a very limited colour palette, sometimes pure colours which are not mixed. Both Spiros' landscapes and nudes are inspired by 18° Century Japanese woodcuts that rarely use more than 5 or 6 colours. His nudes are very specifically inspired by famous artists such as Kitagawa Utamoro and Japanese ukiyo-e woodcuts.
Spiros takes the inspiration a step further, asking the model to strike the same pose as in the Japanese print, but recreating only part of the image. He never paints the whole body, and again, as with his landscapes, a calm stillness is depicted.”
