Bite of Silence by Valentine Bouvet. On display until September 6th, 2025.

With bold compositions and a deliberately intimate gaze, Bouvet invites us to reevaluate how society consumes both food and women.

These figurative oil paintings, lush in texture and saturated in color, blur the lines between sensuality, consumption, and identity. The images challenge viewers to confront how everyday objects and bodily details, such as cherries or lips, are culturally loaded with meaning, especially when filtered through the lens of gender.

Valentine Bouvet’s latest body of work, Bite of Silence, continues her vibrant and provocative exploration of contemporary femininity, using food as both a metaphor and a medium for reflection.

This series was born during her residency at the Akropoditi Dance Center (Syros), where she worked closely with volunteers to examine the personal and collective rituals surrounding food. In these pieces, mouths are exaggerated, ears are ornamented with edible adornments, and bellies become landscapes, all rendered with a softness that contrasts their disruptive undertones.

“Bouvet highlights the repetition and restriction many women experience in their relationship with eating, drawing parallels between bodily autonomy and social control.”

Bite of Silence by Valentine Bouvet. On display until September 6th, 2025.

Bouvet’s approach remains deeply rooted in her broader practice of challenging societal expectations placed on women.

As a member of Cercle de l’Art and a vocal advocate for gender equity in the arts, she uses Bite of Silence not only as personal expression but also as cultural critique. These works extend beyond aesthetic pleasure, they function as subtle acts of resistance, making the viewer complicit in the very systems the paintings interrogate. Through this series, Bouvet reasserts the power of figurative painting to disturb, question, and ultimately transform our perceptions.
